SuggestionsEdit

I think we should have a page on this wiki where users can request template codes and repair broken or unused templates on their wiki(s). What do you think?? Just reply on my talk page or here. Thanks,-User:HerbisoarEmpireTalkContributions 02:21, 23 March 2009 (UTC)HerbisoarEmpire

Sidebar Edit

Category:Category templates isn't linked properly on the sidebar: it links to "Category:Category:Category_templates". --D. (talk · contr) 16:20, 29 March 2009 (UTC)

Changes to Template:T Edit

http://templates.wikia.com/index.php?title=Template:T&action=history

I'm wondering whether recent changes (now avoiding the use of T/piece) have been adequately assessed on a Wikia-wide basis. You're one of our template experts. Any opinion?

Robin Patterson (Talk) 04:55, March 2, 2010 (UTC)

I know I'm not Kirkburn, but I feel I can provide a relevant opinion here: I think that the elimination of the use of T/piece, instead including its functionality directly in T, is actually a good thing, for two reasons: First, removing T/piece from the picture eliminates two pages (the template and its /doc page) which must be copied or recopied to other Wikias. And second, removing t/piece decreases the total amount a call of T adds to a given page's transclusion limits, especially if any of unnamed parameter #2 or higher is used, due to a bug in the MediaWiki software (see wikipedia:Wikipedia:Template limits for more details). This opinion, of course, comes from a person with far more experience working with Wikipedia's templates than with Wikia's, though, and I'd love to hear your own thoughts, Kirkburn. =) Dinoguy1000 (talkcontribslogsblock log) as 67.58.229.153 08:19, March 2, 2010 (UTC)
Having copied T/piece and its /doc to a dozen or more wikis, I would be among the first to agree that the elimination would be good if there were no bad effects. Kirkburn seems to have invented T (at least being the first to create it on a central Wikia site - http://starter.wikia.com/index.php?title=Template:T&action=history), so he probably knows why T/piece was invented and is probably one of the best people to check whether the new development is real progress with no disadvantages. — Robin Patterson (Talk) 01:35, March 3, 2010 (UTC)
If it works, fine by me :) I didn't originally code it - it came from WoWWiki maybe two or three years ago, possibly before some of the more useful software updates. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 15:02, March 3, 2010 (UTC)

oh yes - please help! Edit

It seems to me that there is a central dumping place for (licensing) templates. I hoped that I found that place here on templates.wikia.com and created a CC-by 3.0 licensing template that I was missing on maelstrom.wikia.com. Now, sadly I can't use my new creation from there... Where do I have to put my templates?--Smart Mole 19:20, May 19, 2010 (UTC)

The template has to be on your wiki to be able to use it. Since the template now exists here, all you have to do is Export that template from this wiki, and then Import it into your wiki. --Yoshord 01:43, May 22, 2010 (UTC)
So - there's no such thing as a central repository for templates? Where do those templates come from that are already there to use?..--Smart Mole 13:18, May 23, 2010 (UTC)
No simple central repository at the moment (though we certainly want to do something like that). The existing templates on new wikis comes from our "starter kit" - i.e. they're physically copied to the wiki on creation. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 19:05, May 24, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks!--Smart Mole 22:11, May 24, 2010 (UTC)

I think some of template need examples after the template. See the box template.

Can a be an Admin?Edit

I LOVE making Templates and updating them, look at the Super Advanced Ambox Template I made, so, can I be an Admin? I can't make the template in this site because it need a special mediawiki code. Funkey100 (talk)progress-wheel.gif 23:33, June 7, 2010 (UTC)

Please respond, I don't care if you don't let me, I want to be an Admin so just say yes or no! Funkey100 (talk)progress-wheel.gif 21:09, June 9, 2010 (UTC)

Sorry, been busy elsewhere! I'll have a look into it soon. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 17:05, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
Ok, tell me if. Funkey100 (talk)progress-wheel.gif 21:32, June 11, 2010 (UTC)
At the moment, I think I will have to decline - this wiki is in a bit of an odd position (it's semi-official), so it means it should generally be restricted to staff/helpers. However, I am quite happy to paste code into the site CSS/JS as needed, and I'll keep thinking on making admins. I need to take another look at this wiki anyway. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 15:49, June 15, 2010 (UTC)
Its okay, i'll still try to improve the wikia. [Template fetch failed for http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Template:c:wildonesgame:User:Funkey100/Sig?action=raw] 17:34, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

Sig Edit

Do you know how to make my sig appear like is this page (http://wildonesgame.wikia.com/wiki/User:Funkey100/Sig), when I put , this happens: [Template fetch failed for https://community.fandom.com/wiki/Template:c:wildonesgame:User:Funkey100/Sig?action=render]. [Template fetch failed for http://community.wikia.com/wiki/Template:c:wildonesgame:User:Funkey100/Sig?action=raw] 18:14, June 17, 2010 (UTC)

I just tried adding the most obvious guess () to the sandbox, and it imported the entire wikia page, including the sidebar and CSS...
I know referencing a community central template works. You could do that. --Yoshord 22:00, June 17, 2010 (UTC)
Ok, i just made that template on every wiki i go to. Funkey100  talk  edits  Ask me for a cool sigs at my talk page 15:40, June 18, 2010 (UTC)

Wiki-networking Edit

Hmm, seeing as this wiki is "semi-official" this might not work as well as with others... But what the heck; would participation in a wiki-network be feasible in such a situation? Specifically, I'm referring to including w:Template:Computersfooter at the bottom of the mainpage and generally implementing w:Project:Interwiki Integration. --Jesdisciple (talk) 06:48, June 21, 2010 (UTC)

World Map Edit

http://chart.apis.google.com/chart?cht=t&chs=440x220&chf=bg,s,5588ff&chco=ffffdd,ff0000,ff0000&chd=s:9&chld={}&chtm=world

I wanted to add a template that used google charts to display a world map (see above), and highlight countries based on the ISO 3166 country codes. that hotlink does not seem to work here. Do you think it would be a good idea? --  Roguebfl   talk    contribs    email   19:27, July 23, 2010 (UTC)

I suggest explaining your issue on Special:Contact. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 09:53, July 26, 2010 (UTC)
Sure, but I wanted your option on putted templates here that require extensions to work 8). Obviously their documentation will have to note this --  Roguebfl   talk    contribs    email   17:24, July 26, 2010 (UTC)
It might not even need an extension. It might be possible to simply ad chart\.apis\.google\.com to MediaWiki:External image whitelist --  Roguebfl   talk    contribs    email   23:46, July 26, 2010 (UTC)
I'm not sure I understand to be honest. I think there's something special about the map APIs, but I don't really know much more. Is it related to this: http://help.wikia.com/wiki/Help:Google_maps Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 10:33, July 27, 2010 (UTC)
No that Google maps, and a seperate API, it's reated to http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Extension:GoogleCharts --  Roguebfl   talk    contribs    email   17:18, July 27, 2010 (UTC)
Aaah, I think I'm understanding better now - you want the image from that link to display inline? To be honest, I still think that's best to go via Special:Contact. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 11:34, July 28, 2010 (UTC)
Yes, I sent that back when I said sure on on the 26th, and have yet to hear back. and I though the installation of extensions should come from the wiki's bureaucrat. not a random user. --  Roguebfl   talk    contribs    email   15:29, July 28, 2010 (UTC)
Hey Gerald,

We don't offer the Google Charts extension at this time. However, as an end around may I suggest using the Verbatim extension to embed your charts?

For example, put the embed code (the big long HTML & script code) in at MediaWiki:Chart

To put the chart on a page use <verbatim>Chart</verbatim>.

Hope this will work for you!

Could you use another admin? Edit

I looked at Special:ListUsers/sysop and you are the only bureaucrat/sysop on this wiki. I'd like to be an admin, if you don't mind.

However, if you think you have it in hand, could you please add Category:Link templates to the sidebar. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6:21 PM PST 29 Jul 2010

I'm still up for being an admin here. Tell me any tasks or things I should monitor. It seems like a lightweight job. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8:46 AM PST 5 Aug 2010
Done, you're now an admin. :) I suppose it's just general maintenance, and ensuring it all makes sense. I've been pretty hands off since I created the wiki as a repository, since it's more about just collating and improving user created stuff. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 15:54, August 5, 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. I'll look around and see if there is anything pressing. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 11:34 PM PST 6 Aug 2010

Placeholder images Edit

Did you make them or get them from somewhere? I want to fill in licensing info. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 5:40 PM PST 11 Aug 2010

I think they came from the Wingdings font (which I made large and played with in Fireworks), and were only ever meant to be temporary. Not sure what license that would mean, if any :( Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 10:04, August 12, 2010 (UTC)
Strange they don't look like they are from a Wingdings font. You must have changed them alot. I would say that would make them CC-by-SA, if you changed them so much that they are not distinguishable from the originals. Do you know the specific font name? -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 9:37 AM PST 16 Aug 2010
Ah, I think some if not all were actually Webdings - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webdings. I think I mainly just added shadows, iirc. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 17:43, August 16, 2010 (UTC)
All of them are webdings, specifically P s Z and hexcode AD. --Yoshord 19:08, August 16, 2010 (UTC)
Okay, I was looking for WINGdings as was originally mentioned. I should have broadened my search. I will do a little research to find out what the licensing implications may be. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 6:47 PM PST 16 Aug 2010
It looks like Webdings really aren't licensed for free use. They are owned by Microsoft and only licensed for non-commercial use. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10:14 PM PST 16 Aug 2010
Fair enough, looks like they should get replaced. :( Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 10:03, August 17, 2010 (UTC)

Central template repository? Edit

I was poking through your old discussions and noticed above that a central template repository is something you guys have been wanting to do... I follow a number of bugs on the MediaWiki Bugzilla, and on one of them, I believe a developer has stated that they are (finally) taking a closer look at interwiki transclusion (if the bug passes through my inbox again, I'll link it here for your reading edification, assuming you don't already know =) ). Is interwiki transclusion what is required for such a repository, and if so, are you guys keeping tabs on this progress? Has anyone at Wikia taken the time yet to seriously think about how something like this would work? (obviously, I'm hopelessly curious and am shamelessly digging for details XD ) Thanks! ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 00:36, August 15, 2010 (UTC)

We have a fairly basic version working on Wikia (to transclude from Central Wikia to other wikis). However, it will be much better to have an 'official' version we can use - if you do come across the bugs, please do link them. The idea for a template repository is still not top priority for us, but it may yet become so. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 13:48, August 16, 2010 (UTC)
I'll keep an eye out for the bugs, then... I'm really hoping for a template repository that works similarly to the help repository, since it would mean we could start creating templates using an arbitrary number of metatemplates without having to worry about reusers having to copy a bunch of metatemplates (as is a significant issue with trying to reuse Wikipedia's templates). ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 21:36, August 16, 2010 (UTC)
Good point, and I agree - if one can just use template:infobox without worrying about all the little templates used within it, it would be muuuuch better :) Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 10:05, August 17, 2010 (UTC)
Hmm... It seems I was mistaken; it was not a bug per se, but a project for Google's Summer of Code 2010. There are some related bugs, though; see bugzilla:1126, bugzilla:4547, and bugzilla:9890. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 21:33, August 17, 2010 (UTC)

Admin? Edit

Hey Kirkburn, if it isn't too much trouble, I was wondering whether I could be an admin here as well? Also, how would I go about becoming an admin on the Starter Pages Wikia; could you set me up, or would I perhaps be better off going through Special:Contact? ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 00:32, August 20, 2010 (UTC)

~poke~ ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 03:53, August 26, 2010 (UTC)
What specifically do you need to do that would require sysop user rights? -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 10:24 PM PST 25 Aug 2010
Nothing immediately, but I wouldn't be surprised if I ended up needing it at some point or another, so I figured I'd ask now and save the trouble of either asking for the bit or asking for an admin's assistance later. It's not for vanity or bragging rights or anything like that, either; I am well-versed in most of the admin tools (I don't often block users) and frequently use them on other wikis. ダイノガイ千?!? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000 08:49, August 26, 2010 (UTC)

CSS on Shodanpedia? Edit

Hi Kirk,

On http://shodan.wikia.com/wiki/SHODANPEDIA,_The_System_Shock_Wiki I saw some things I cannot imagine how to achieve
I have some tech questions, if I may...

 1. How did they suppress the "On the Wiki" tab (and its 3 sub-tabs) in the Wiki Navigation?
 2. How did they modify the style of your wiki? Did you use HTML commands (div style, span style...) instead of CSS? Because http://shodan.wikia.com/wiki/MediaWiki:Wikia.css is unmodified...
 3. How on Earth did they suppress that "Contribute" button on each page?

Thanks a lot in advance for your help! Maniacfan (talk) 12:55, September 10, 2012 (UTC)

1+3 are because they're using an older version of the navigation system. We're still working on it a bit, and we'll be converting them over. (If you have any feedback on it in general, I suggest sending thoughts to Special:Contact).
2 is that it was themed via Special:ThemeDesigner - more info on that at Help:Theme designer. :)
Hope that helps! Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 13:01, September 10, 2012 (UTC)

Meta Wikia Edit

Hello!

Sorry for disturbing you. Recently, a few other administrators of Wikia-related wikis and I started the Meta Wikia project. It is for all wikis dedicated to Wikia relevant topics. I feel that Templates Wiki would be a constructive addition to the project. Do you have any opinions or thoughts? I can completely understand you not having any interest in joining. Thank you in advance.

Best regards. --Yuzura☆炎のマスタ 00:09, May 30, 2013 (UTC)

Question Edit

Hello the almighty Kirkburn, I have a question on advanced userpages.  On many fancy wikis I see administrators userpages that are pretty much eye candy and even include a few animations to go along with when the mouse moves over a certain button.  Now, what I really want to know is, how do users create such advanced userpages?  I've dabbled quite a bit with some of the coding included with these (without publishing edits) and found ridiculously complex strings of code.  Now, I've heard of a "Template Editor" but were these written rather created using the editor?  Thanks,

Xonius (talkcontribslogsblock log)

Hi! There's no simple answer for your question, unfortunately. Generally they likely edit in source mode, using a combination of wikitext, HTML and CSS (rather than using the visual editor or the template editor). Wikis basically allow all HTML and CSS constructs, meaning you can do most things you can do on a 'normal' webpage, just within the user page. Kirkburn (talk) @fandom 16:29, August 13, 2013 (UTC)

Some annon and a user went through and created a lot of spam pages that need to be deleted, here they are:

And an annon has vandalised or created the following pages:

 • :Category:Lowry_Perry
 • :Category:Lightning_Crews
 • Wikia_Templates
 • :Category:William_Velten
 • Plantilla:nose

How would I become a admin or rollback here? Do I ask you or is there an apply page here? This happens way too often.

Template:SPW Edit

Hi Kirkburn. I wanted to ask if we could have a bot edit, or permission to undergo a bot edit, to remove Template:SPW. Currently the main function of that template is to create an ugly redlink on the end user's wiki, because they may install our templates, but none of them is going to install Template:SPW.

The entire functionality of that template is absorbed into Template:Documentation, using Template:Is SPW instead of individual SPW calls. There is no need for any code on individual pages, with the exception of Templates Wiki templates and those that are specifically updated versions of SPW templates.

May we take it out en masse? Henstepl (talk) 04:37, November 29, 2017 (UTC)

Wiki name discussion in forums Edit

Please read and comment on the name of the wiki. Lady Aleena (talk) 00:32, December 15, 2017 (UTC)

Javascript Edit

The consequence of removing many redlinks from many, many templates has been the creation of a custom Template:Documentation. We should not assume the user wants any flavor of our Documentation template, and certainly not our custom one (which tells the user to revert itself if it is accidentally copied over...)

I asked at Dev wiki, and thankfully, KockaAdmiralac provided me with some code at User:Henstepl/common.js which allows us to automatically fill the text field at Special:Export via URL parameters such as those found on this link (though the JS is not active for you). We could automatically generate a URL to export all relevant pages to a template, with as many dependencies as we like, and finally encourage reluctant users to export over manual copy-paste (which often ignores attribution).

Do you have an opinion to post at the relevant discussion at Help talk:Copy? Would you be open to this script's installation on this wiki? Henstepl (talk) 20:35, January 30, 2018 (UTC)

Vandalism but not actually...?Edit

I've already reported to the VSTF, but they said it's out of their jurisdiction. A user created pages about films and I just wanted to let you know about the "vandalisms-but-not-really." I've already marked them with Delete Templates and the pages are also at the top of the activity feed at the time that I'm writing this. ~ COƧMO THE CHOCOBO | TALK? | at 18:52, Sep 01, 2019 (UTC)
