Portal and Slider Help

Hello! My name is Drake and I come from the One Piece wiki. We are in the midst of redesigning the main page, but we are having trouble trying to implement a slider similar to this Most of our users don't know code and our best coder who happens to be a VSTF is also kind of stump. We have what we want to put on the slider planned out for the most part, but creating the slider itself is tricky because it's not a mere cut and paste, it's complex css and requires portals and certain templates I believe? Any chance you could help us out or refer to someone who can? My sig is kind of broken atm, so you can message me here Roranoa Drake II (talk) 14:57, July 24, 2016 (UTC)

Re: Portal and Slider Help

Aha. I have already made numerous attempts at contacting Tierrie the past few months with no response from him. Are there any similar or not as complicated sliders you could recommend or help out with? Anything that's not the standard carousel would be fine Roranoa Drake II (talk) 17:09, July 24, 2016 (UTC)

Thank you. I really appreciate it Roranoa Drake II (talk) 17:00, July 25, 2016 (UTC)

That's great! In the mean time, I will show the portal page you linked me to the other members of my wiki. Thanks Roranoa Drake II (talk)

Navbox Help

The navboxes on my wiki are showing up with the header of {Header}, and the links/lists are replaced with {Body}.

I think the problem is with the formatting of the navboxes, because I'm using the latest base templates from this wiki.

Do you know how to fix this?

Affected Navboxes

Santademon (talk) 10:17, August 3, 2016 (UTC)

See User_talk:Santademon#Navbox_problems. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 3 Aug 2016 7:55 AM Pacific

That change has nothing to do with the problem. I'll even copy/paste a navbox here to prove it.

See? Santademon (talk) 01:40, August 4, 2016 (UTC)

But, when I replace it with the regular navbox, it still doesn't work. I've done so above so you can see for yourself. Santademon (talk) 02:54, August 4, 2016 (UTC)

I removed all the links to pages that will never be on the wiki here. I hope this is not bad form. Lady Aleena (talk) 08:13, January 2, 2018 (UTC)

Slider Update

I got in touch with Tierrie this week. Thanks again for your help :D Roranoa Drake II (talk)

Another Update

That's fine. Any chance you would like to help out as well or know anyone who could assist? We've already begun work on a test wiki Roranoa Drake II (talk) 17:52, August 13, 2016 (UTC)

A 32 team 5 round bracket

Hi. I need help with a template. Here it is. I tried to make a 32 team 5 round bracket using a 16 team 4 round bracket, but I have no idea as to what I've done with it. I'm not sure how to fix it, and I need some help. I wasn't too sure where to ask for help. Thanks. AenMaps (talk) 19:25, January 26, 2017 (UTC)

About this wiki

Hello Fandyllic,

I was wondering what this wiki was about. I know it is for wikis that are still developing and who would like to get templates with ease, but I just wanted to know if there was more to it.

Thanks for your assistance,

Dual documentation

Hello Fandyllic. I wanted to direct your attention to Template talk:Documentation. I have left a section there that I wanted your input on, as it would represent a major change for the wiki. Henstepl (talk) 00:21, August 18, 2017 (UTC)

Hey. May I have my wiki-wide notice? Though I'm not too convinced that very many people will have a very strong opinion in the matter. Kirkburn hasn't gotten back to me. After a while of no response, I'm going to be inclined to take the initiative - a significant impedance is that Template:Documentation is sysop protected. Henstepl (talk) 02:31, August 24, 2017 (UTC)

May Template:Documentation be unprotected? It would significantly increase the exportability of the templates of this wiki if all calls for SPW were replaced with |SPW= parameters of Template:Documentation - which won't form redlinks. Henstepl (talk) 05:34, October 25, 2017 (UTC)

Because the default behavior of Template:Documentation is now to display that a template does not exist on SPW, Template:SPW is now redundant and can be removed en masse. This might best be done by a bot.
The templates that exist on w:c:starter are the only real exceptions to that statement, so they have been updated to include the |SPW= is on or |SPW= is newer template. In any case, it will no longer throw a red link or any error to copy them, nor will the other templates once their SPW calls have been removed.
Template:! is protected, so I ask that you add |SPW=is on to its Documentation template call. I guess you don't have a bot on this wiki, so I'll find someone to perform that mass removal, if you approve. Henstepl (talk) 19:51, November 15, 2017 (UTC)
Have you an opinion regarding interlanguage links? Since our Template:Documentation is designed not to be copied, I have enabled interlanguage links as a parameter of that template. There is no need for potential redlinks anymore.
Furthermore, if we simply change the Documentation template to assume a DE, JA, ZH interlanguage link exists from the start, there is no need for parameters on Documentation anyway... Another opportunity for a mass bot action. I invite a reply at Template talk:Documentation#Interlanguage links on /doc subpages. Henstepl (talk) 06:48, November 25, 2017 (UTC)

With the departure of Dinoguy, there are no active bureaucrats on this wiki. There is only Kirkburn, who is probably busy elsewhere. Have you considered asking him to be made a bureaucrat? Henstepl (talk) 19:51, November 15, 2017 (UTC)

Template redirects

Hello there. I believe this wiki does not need template redirects. They are a bit of clutter, in my opinion. So, would you consider removing them from the wiki? Lady Aleena (talk) 22:13, November 16, 2017 (UTC)

Fix portable infobox headers' margins?

Hello again. Will you please fix the top margins for headers in portable infoboxes? Currently, the margins are being set by this bit of css...

#WikiaArticle h2 {
    margin-top: 20px;

Since headers in portable infoboxes are also <h2>, they are getting top-margin: 20px too. It is making portable infobox group headers (also <h2>) too tall. I'll help if you want.

Thank you in advance! Lady Aleena (talk) 06:32, November 19, 2017 (UTC)

And now thanks afterwards for fixing it! Have a nice day! Lady Aleena (talk) 19:36, November 20, 2017 (UTC)

More on infoboxes

Hello there!

I recently saw the link Infobox book char portable on Infobox book character. I think that is backward. Portable infoboxes should get the bare name and non-portable infoboxes should be given a name showing that they do not use the portable infobox standard. In this case, I would suggest the following:

  1. Move Infobox book character to Infobox book character non-portable without redirect.
  2. Move Infobox book char portable to Infobox book character.
  3. Remove any redirect clutter.

Do that for every infobox that makes portable infobxes seem like the weird ones. Portable infoboxes should be almost required in this wiki. All non-portable infoboxes should be in a category like Infoboxes not migrated to encourage users to write portable infoboxes, which is a best practice across Wikia these days.

Also, there is a Infobox character page, however, it is a list of three other character based infoboxes. So, if an admin of another wiki wants a general purpose Infobox character, there isn't one to export from here to the other wiki.

I am willing to do most of the grunt work for this, but I wanted your thoughts before I fully jump into this.

One last thought, when are you going to clean out Candidates for deletion? Lady Aleena (talk) 13:54, December 4, 2017 (UTC)

Blog written!
There is a request for adminship pending by Henstepl if you need help. I'd apply, too, if you think you need more hands here. Lady Aleena (talk) 20:45, December 4, 2017 (UTC)
Hello again! The steps to move those templates around are only possible for admin. It appears non-admin do not have the option to move without a redirect, so would you please do it? Lady Aleena (talk) 22:00, December 7, 2017 (UTC)
I would need to be an admin to have the check box saying Leave a redirect behind, so I can uncheck it so would not leave a redirect behind. Lady Aleena (talk) 05:38, December 8, 2017 (UTC)

New rule please?

Hello again. I am sorry to be such a bother, but I am seeing a lot of things that concern me.

The latest problem I have come across is the appropriation of Template:= for emoticon creation. That is not the standard use for the template, which is to output an = sign when needed for use in templates with conditionals. So, while it still works when used bare "=", it should not have all the emoticon clutter. I have been thinking but can not come up with a solution for it.

So onto the new rule: Do not appropriate a standard template for any other function or use. Check other wikis and Wikipedia for the standard use of it before altering it. (You may want to reword it.)

Also, would you please go into the two following categories and bulk edit their template type:

That would clean up a half a page of Insights/templateswithouttype. Only admin can bulk edit template types. As this wiki gets more organized, you can do this more often. Right now there are over 100 uncategorized templates. I try to work on that too, along with the infobox project I've volunteered to handle. 8)

I just want to see this wiki become the place for templates, and standardization and organization are keys to making it that, in my opinion. If I am wrong, please let me know.

Have a nice day! Lady Aleena (talk) 00:51, December 7, 2017 (UTC)

Wiki name discussion in forums

Please read and comment on the name of the wiki. Lady Aleena (talk) 00:31, December 15, 2017 (UTC)

Delete please? Template project pages?

Will you please delete everything in Candidates for deletion that has anything to do with infoboxen? They are in the way. I can't clean up infoboxen without your help. So please?

Also, do you think a project like this should get a "project" page akin to WikiProjects on Wikipedia? Project:Template project:Infoboxen maybe? My user blog is too remote for normal users to see it. Lady Aleena (talk) 03:32, December 15, 2017 (UTC)

Thank you, thank you, thank you! for the deletions and catching some of my idiot mistaken placements of the delete template.
For the project, it was just an idea I wanted to pass onto you. I nowiki'd the link so it doesn't keep it as a wanted page. Lady Aleena (talk) 10:35, December 16, 2017 (UTC)

Unprotect please?

Would you please remove the protection for Template:Ambox by color/style sheet so I can clean it up a little and categorize it? Lady Aleena (talk) 22:37, December 15, 2017 (UTC)

Infobox television/colour

I just came upon Infobox television/colour. With Infobox television now portable, that template would not work with it anymore. However, those color choices are not lost.

If you go to the bottom of my common.css after the Taxobox formats, you will see how I translated those colors for the portable infobox format. If you want to see how they look, you can go to my sandbox. I've added three of my own color themes, however, there is one that needs some tweaking.

So, I could turn Infobox television color into Infobox television/code.css with the styles you wrote.

Some notes about the themes. I tied them to the name of the series, but that does not have to be set in stone. Also, when a theme name is entered with spaces, the spaces are converted into hyphens (-). The O.C. was converted to The-O_C.

Themes take a little more work, but you can look and see how your color choices have been converted to the portable infobox format. All you have to do is add the CSS to your common css to see the colors.

I would like to know what you think. Lady Aleena (talk) 12:23, December 16, 2017 (UTC)

I do not have a sandbox wiki.
Personal CSS for portable infoboxes would not be suggested for all other wikis out there. CSS for templates made here would have to be put into MediaWiki:Wikia.css or MediaWiki:Common.css on other wikis.
The only reason I suggest putting the CSS in personal CSS here, is so that you do not get overwhelmed by everyone asking you to put their template css in Wikia.css or Common.css. There would need to be a CSS vetting process for that too.
So while personal CSS works, it is not viewable by everyone.
You could put everything from Taxobox down in my personal CSS into either Wikia.css or Common.css so everyone could see it.
I've also started the Template styles category, if you want to take a peek. Lady Aleena (talk) 21:01, December 17, 2017 (UTC)
May I have your blessing to alter Infobox television/colour into the css I have on my common css and change the name to Template:Infobox television/code.css? Lady Aleena (talk) 10:20, December 21, 2017 (UTC)

Please request new database dump

Sorry to keep asking for things, but would you please request a new database dump on Special:Statistics? With the wiki name change, all conditionals that use SITENAME will need to be changed if they used the old wiki name: Wikia Templates. I would need a new database dump to search for those conditionals and fix them. I already got the ones on Documentation, but there may be more out there.

Thank you in advance! Lady Aleena (talk) 21:37, December 20, 2017 (UTC)

I have requested adminship. If you approve, I will contact Kirkburn. Also, would you mind if I put you in for bureaucrat? You deserve it, and we need an active bureaucrat. Lady Aleena (talk) 02:37, December 22, 2017 (UTC)

Kirkburn has promoted me. Is there anything you want me to know? Also, I'd like to start cleaning out Candidates for deletion if you don't have any objections. Lady Aleena (talk) 22:07, December 29, 2017 (UTC)

Common.css request

Would you please add the following css to Common.css? Lady Aleena (talk) 01:14, December 27, 2017 (UTC)

.plainlist ol, .plainlist ul {
	line-height: inherit;
	list-style: none none;
	margin: 0;
I'll do this now. Lady Aleena (talk) 22:07, December 29, 2017 (UTC)

Opinion on modular infoboxes?

Hi Fandyllic. You may or may not recall that before it was deleted outright, the SPW page Template:Infobox used to be in the style of our current Template:Infobox. I have recreated that modular functionality in a Template:Modular infobox which also makes use of the portable infobox markup, and I propose it be moved to the current location "Template:Infobox".

I was wondering if you had an opinion on that matter, because we are pretty starkly divided. If you have no opinion, you can remove this message if you wish to reduce clutter. Henstepl (talk) 11:56, December 31, 2017 (UTC)

Your portal project

Hello there!

I was wondering if your portal project is complete with the following templates, or are there more out there that need to be added to it?

  • Template:Portal/Component/Slider
  • Template:Portal/Main
  • Template:PortalPage
  • Template:PortalPage/doc
  • Template:PortalSection
  • Template:PortalSection/doc
  • Template:PortalTransformer
  • Template:PortalTransformer/doc
  • Portalportrait
  • Portalportrait/doc

I hope you aren't offended, but I would like to suggest a consistent naming scheme for those templates. The first two templates names being subpages of non-existent pages makes it seem that there will be at least two more templates created: Template:Portal and Template:Portal/Component. So, will there be a template Portal where all of these subtemplates will be brought together?

I am trying to get things organized and would love to see the portal project completed. Lady Aleena (talk) 04:23, January 6, 2018 (UTC)

You could have deleted them without the delete notice. Nothing uses them outside of the group. Lady Aleena (talk) 22:12, January 8, 2018 (UTC)
I'll probably delete them soon. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 8 Jan 2018 3:30 PM Pacific

RE: Module:Sandbox

It's me playing with Lua on Lady Aleena's request, she needed a way to list all subpages without parent pages so I built that module for her. I could've done it in my sandbox wiki but I supposed it's better to do it on the wiki where she would be using that module. (The module is complete and usable now) -- Cube-shaped garbage can 06:43, January 9, 2018 (UTC)

Not really, but I'll poke Lady Aleena to do so if she wants to. -- Cube-shaped garbage can 23:11, January 9, 2018 (UTC)
The module has been renamed to orphan subpages. Lady Aleena (talk) 10:23, January 10, 2018 (UTC)

Deciding infoboxen

Hello there!

I started a new sub-section in the infobox conversation to hopefully finally decide what to do about them. Please come over and let us know your opinion. Lady Aleena (talk) 10:20, January 10, 2018 (UTC)

P.S. I will contact Kirkburn through Special contact to see if he has an opinion. Lady Aleena (talk) 10:26, January 10, 2018 (UTC)

New pending policies

Hello. I know this wiki is trying to be light on policies, but from what I have seen here there are a few that are potentially needed. I've added a few potential policies to Policy for your consideration. I will contact Kirkburn through special contact. LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 10:32, January 15, 2018 (UTC)

If Kirkburn approves of the policy additions/changes, you can remove the text about admins not ratifying them... they all look good to me. We should give a period (2 weeks?) for community feedback and then we can say they are ratified by the community. If you want me to start a thread or something, just say so. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 15 Jan 2018 9:37 AM Pacific

User lang boxen

Do you think anyone would care if I deleted all the user (lang) boxen that use Bable to make them? No one is using them. LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 20:18, January 19, 2018 (UTC)

Besides checking if these templates are used locally, how do you know no one is using them? -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 19 Jan 2018 3:16 PM Pacific
There is a page called WhatLinksHere that tells me that those boxen are all unused. LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 23:32, January 19, 2018 (UTC)
Right, that means you are only checking the local wiki. Unfortunately, the whole point of this wiki is to copy templates to other wikis and use them there. So, you might want to do some googling like: Template:TEMPLATENAME and see if they aren't really used on other wikis.
You can delete them if like less than 3 wikis are using them. If it were 3 or more we might get some blow back. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 19 Jan 2018 3:45 PM Pacific
Are you planning to create user lang templates for all the languages at all the levels using Template:Babel? The 5 or 6 user boxen we have now are easily recreatable on other wikis using Babel as we are doing here. I am sure that is how other wikis do it. Template:User en-3 is just en. I do not have any plans on creating Template:User af-0 to Template:User zu-N. Do you? LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 10:41, January 20, 2018 (UTC)
What would be better would be proper documentation for dependencies. You seemed to have side-stepped my point. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 21 Jan 2018 5:50 PM Pacific

Template projects

Good morning!

I wrote up a guideline for user projects here on Templates Wiki. Would you give it a read and tell me if you agree with allowing it? LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 13:08, January 24, 2018 (UTC)

An FAQ or more explanation might help for some terminology you use. What is a template project? A set of related templates? Templates made by a certain user? Taken from a certain wiki?
You should mention that Module: code is for Lua and as far as I know, you can't categorize modules.
So you want template projects to live as sub-pages Templates Wiki:Template project. I guess that's okay.
You could list projects with the <forum> tag used with wiki-style forums. It is basically a simplified subset of DPL.
I'm very close to allowing it with some of the changes mentioned above (not all are necessary, but the more the better). -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 24 Jan 2018 3:45 PM Pacific
I will see what I can do about the terminology.
Modules can be categorized, but one must comment the category at the end of the module. You can see Module:Datecalc, it is in Category:Dev modules.
I was just going to use a category tree to list the projects instead of the forum, since they are easier to set up.
So, I'll let you know when the changes are made. LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 13:37, January 25, 2018 (UTC)

Message boxes

How attached to the current Ambox, Ambox 2, and Ombox are you? LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 12:01, February 1, 2018 (UTC)

Please be more detailed. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 1 Feb 2018 8:14 AM Pacific
Do you want messages boxes by color or by function? Currently the amboxes we have are by color not by problem level meaning that users can misuse them. I have written a new suite of them on another wiki, using Wikipedia's parameters as a base. Would you want pseudo-Wikipedia style message boxes instead of the by-color message boxes? LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 20:53, February 1, 2018 (UTC)
I prefer by color, since function can be an ambiguous term in this case. Users can misuse anything. In general, I don't like many of Wikipedia's templates, because they are often overly complicated and almost never document their dependencies well. However, if you can port a working version of a Wikipedia template with good dependency documentation, then I welcome it. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 1 Feb 2018 1:14 PM Pacific
I have written a Wikipedia-like group of message box templates, but only in style choices. The underlying code is very different. I will rename the current ones, and then bring the group of templates I wrote over. LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 22:57, February 1, 2018 (UTC)
I will not rename the current Ombox, it looks like it is a poorly copied version of Wikipedia's template. I will preserve the the Ambox templates with renames. LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 23:02, February 1, 2018 (UTC)
If you think your new templates are a replacement for Ombox, you can nuke Ombox. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 1 Feb 2018 3:59 PM Pacific

Hello. What is MediaWiki:Needhelp? Also, why can't I edit it to remove it from the under construction category? LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 22:08, February 11, 2018 (UTC)

Who knows what it is, but you're running into an artifact from the old days of Wikia. In the past, much of the MediaWiki namespace was open for editing to admins, so sometimes lazy admins put stuff there rather than putting it somewhere else and protecting it. Later the namespace was locked down and only stuff that was whitelisted could be edited. You'll have to ask staff to investigate and cleanup/delete that page, if it really bothers you. -- Fandyllic (talk · contr) 12 Feb 2018 12:30 PM Pacific
Thanks! LA Please keep conversations together, reply here. @ 17:02, February 13, 2018 (UTC)

Sorry, junk to delete

Hey there, I was attempting to import some charts from wikipedia so that building family trees would be more possible. I realized pretty quick after starting the attempt that I was in over my head. Just wanted to mention it so they can be cleaned up since I started with some modules that would have been needed. Can you 'do something with'/make use of [1] - as many of the components are not really relevant on that wiki (and it involves someone's hard work setting the details after all). Jackiespeel (talk) 22:42, September 2, 2018 (UTC)
