Forums: Index Help desk Template Substitution

Hello. I've been trying to figure out how to substitute one template with another for the purposes of mass reproduction and editing, but I keep running into some problems.

My goal: To have a simple template of text with headers (for example: Biography, Achievements, Miscellaneous Info) that I can edit on individual pages without it being copied to every other page with the template. Currently, I have one template set up simply with the text I'd like on the page, and a second template whose purpose is to copy the first; hopefully, so that I can edit each of the headings on multiple pages.

I've played with the substituation functions, but they're not turning out as I'd like. I can get the second template to show the first in preview mode, but when I place the second template onto a page, I get a simple line such as "{{subst:secondtemplate}}".

I would strong appreciate any help I can get, because it'll be a pain in the butt to have to go through and edit all the pages; I didn't know edits would carry across templates when I set the pages up!

EDIT: I thought I give an example of how I have each template set up, for clarity's sake.

Template 1 (Without the quotation marks):

"==Heading One=="

Text will be edited here

"==Heading Two=="

And here

"==Heading Three=="

And also here

Template 2:

Unfortunately, what you're asking is impossible: the edit links on the section headers will point back to the template, meaning that anyone that clicks on one to add or update information will be taken to the template and will probably mistakenly edit it instead of the page proper (I tried basically this same system years ago on a different wiki, before I really had a grasp on how template transclusion works). You would be better off forgoing the template in favor of just manually structuring each article; while there are workarounds that would allow such a template to work, it is not pretty or intuitive and sacrifices general ease of editing for page layout consistency, never a good tradeoff. ディノ千?!? · ☎ Dinoguy1000 21:08, February 25, 2013 (UTC)
